Hi everyone (From NYC/New Jersey)

Quick question for everyone? What is the general rule when it comes to wet vs dry food? I always have dry food available. I've only had him home for two days and he has been eating just about one large can on wet food a day. Is this too much/too little? He is currently 14 weeks and weighs exactly 3 pounds. Should he be allowed to eat as much wet as he can? I don't want to overfeed him but he's very active and always playing (can hear the bells going all day long) and I do not want to underfed him either. Thanks!

I don't think it's possible to over feed a growing kitten. Let him eat as much as he wants. I'm a wet food/raw food supporter. How many times per day do you feed him? Three to 4 times a day would be my recommendation. If he leaves food after a meal, no big deal. It'll give you a better idea of what he needs per day if you give him more than he can normally eat per meal. Then you can adjust accordingly. His appetite will likely increase until he's at least a year old.

I've been free feeding dry and splitting a can of wet 3 times a day. I guess I'm going to increase the amount of wet food each feeding to see what his appetite is like. What do you feed for raw? My dogs are on a partially raw diet consisting mostly of chicken backs. Definitely not something his little teeth can bite through.

I feed whole prey -- rats, mice, chicks, quail. Also for variety I give them raw beef, cooked chicken (they don't like raw), baked salmon, raw rabbit. If you want to try chicken, feed legs & thighs. Dark meat and organ meats have the most vitamins, minerals, and most importantly, taurine, a necessary amino acid that cats can't synthesize on their own. We have a lot of good information here http://www.savannahcatchat.com/forums/savannah-cat-diet/ if you haven't visited it yet.

He's a growing Kitten I would free feed him what he wants canned and!/or dry! I feed raw. Mine are all over 3years now, so I do have scheduled feedings for them....I still really just let them eat till they are full. the only one I really watch is my female she can be a piggy and get heavy if I let her, but the other two are lean.

When you say whole prey do you mean live or frozen thawed? Can his littl teeth make work of an adult mouse? If a
Mostly raw diet preferred then that is the way I will go :)

I feed frozen thawed. Rodentpro.com has a variety of sizes of various prey. I started with fuzzies and then worked up in size as their jaws became stronger. Didn't take long, LOL. You also have choices of whole ground from Hare Today, Feline's Pride, and Rad Cat.

Zuri will still only eat the fuzzies...she LOVES the one day old quail - will not touch anything but the day old quail. But the smaller whole prey have really no nutritional value, so one would have to supplement with ground raw (she gets ground quail now from hare-today) and some canned...

Also...Blue ridge Beef sells a pretty high quality ground quail, rabbit, chicken, etc. and you can call and order and then pick up in Rockaway NJ.
