I just had a bit of a traumatic experience... My water pump broke, and as I live in a rural area the long weekend meant I couldn't get the part I needed, and as I don't drive, I have been hauling water from a community well a mile up the road on my bicycle, which requires getting my bike through the front gate without letting the cats out. Somehow, last night, after the cats were in, when I brought the water and bike into the main fenced yard, I forgot to close the front gate. So it was wide open all night. HB is always anxious to get out at the crack of dawn, and I let him out and then took advantage of the time to spend some one on one time with WC. HB usually spends the first hour he is out quickly trotting around like he has a list of places he wants to check out, to see what he missed being in all night. And he was out for an hour before I realized the front gate we use to go for walks was wide open. I still can't believe I did that. HB must have noticed, but he stayed in the yard. He is totally paranoid and apparently decided he prefers having a human to protect him outside of the fence. And WC was still snoozing. When I noticed the open gate, HB was with me, and I was able to carry HB down to the open gate and shut it before either of them ventured out. HB has excellent road sense, and would not get lost - but I don't want him to ever get a taste of freedom, and WC is a total space case. But then I discovered the tree of ripe prune plums had attracted a racoon that was still in the fenced area... and it wasn't bothered by me trying to herd it out the gate. Having such a large and partly wild fenced area made it impossible to get it to move towards the open gate. I am so grateful the local wildlife center sent over a couple people and the racoon decided it was getting too crowded, and we managed to herd it out the gate. At one point it tried to climb the fence... the electric fence was off, but it couldn't get over the lip... Anyways... HB who was getting frantic being kept in now has his safe yard back. Hopefully I won't do that again and within a week I will finish the entryway I am building in front of my gate so it is easier to get my bike and wheel barrow in and out with rounding up the cats every time. But I am a bit frazzled....

I have one of those ripple rugs and my 2 played together in it a lot the first couple months, and still will play with me if I poke around under it, but mostly they have lost interest. Sometimes at night WC will bring in a mouse, and he always takes it to the ripple rug and drops it there. So he does get the concept. He just has his own ideas about how to use it.( I intervene and stop his game plans if I am awake when this happens)

Goodness me what a fright that must have gave you, could have been a lot worse, thankfully all was well in the end, and HB was sensible enough to stay close to home. Thank goodness for that.
Don't get any raccoons in Scotland but we do get a lot of foxes visiting, thankfully mostly during the night, however with the Savannahs acute sense of hearing, it does always unsettle Vito.
Seems the ripple rug is quite popular, can't believe I hadn't heard about them before, I'm usually quite up to date with cat toys.

Thanks for the kind words... I am also relieved I managed to do something so astonishingly stupid with no serious consequences... If HB ever realized what he is missing out there, it could totally ruin his appreciation of fenced yard... and I often have to find WC and bring him in and put him in front of a bowl of food before he realizes he is really hungry. And he sometimes needs to be rescued because he forgets the enclosed back porch has a opening to the enclosed front porch and cat flap into the house. If he ever wandered out the gate, there is a good chance I would never see him again. The racoons here usually just ignore cats, and my cats didn’t seem alarmed there was a racoon in the yard, but if the racoon felt cornered or trapped, that could change...

Just glad that everything turned out okay and disaster was averted. Accidents happen, don't be so hard on yourself, we've had a couple of close calls with Vito escaping the back garden, luckily hubby can run and managed to catch-up with him, on both occasions it was down to sheer carelessness on our behalf and the quickness Vito displays at giving you the slip at the kitchen door which leads into the garden. At the moment he is only allowed out on his harness until all the ground works are done. Take comfort in the fact that HB is close to his mummy and wouldn't venture away.
