I'm a new member looking for a kitten and I have a question

Hi everyone!

I am in the process of looking for a kitten and trying to decide between an F3 and F2. I certainly want a real servally looking tall cat that looks nothing like a domestic but I want him to be real friendly. is there a large drop off in appearance and temperament between the F2 and F3?

By the way, I'm so glad that I found this forum, it sure is fun and informative! This will be our 1st Savannah!

Welcome jungleboy! I'm not sure there is much of a difference, but I will let the more experienced breeders answer you...glad you are doing lots of research and I'm sure you will find the perfect Savannah!

Glad you found us! feel free to ask away ;)

I have to agree with Jacqui, once you get passed the F1 you just have a more domestic looking cat, and looks and personality will all depend on the individual kitten and the outcrosses in its background.

I don't agree. I think there are a lot of lower generation Savannahs that are very beautiful, exotic and servally now days. They don't need to be an F1 to be wonderful. There is a lot more to a Savannah than the serval side to them. I have an F3 girl that actually looks more serval than my F2 girl of similar age. Side by side, they look very similar so that my hubby has to ask which one is that? My F5 is my favorite altogether. It really depends on the cat. Like the addage goes, "Beauty is as Beauty does."

I think it depends on the cat, as others have said. I struggled with the same question when getting Vienna (I wanted an F2 or F3). In the end, I decided it was important for me to get an F2, just because I didn't want an F1, but I wanted as close as possible. I'm very happy with my decision to get her. She's very "Servally" and everyone's always saying how different she is from our other two cats. Her looks and her personality make it clear she's definitely an "exotic" kitty! And it's only been three weeks!

Best of luck!

Thank you so much! So you say it's been 3 weeks? Where did you get her?

My F3 Duma gets the same sort of response, everyone immediately knows he's not "just a cat" and clearly is "exotic" with tall ears that seem to be growing faster than the rest of his body. I'm not sure how to judge whether he's "servally" lol but in looking for him I was hoping for personality over looks and he most certainly is Mr. Personality. I call him my "little gentleman" because he's just that. He does have his little kitten wild streak, but when it matters most he is the sweetest little boy, we call him anything but cat--kangaroo, monkey, creature, and even puppy are among his nicknames. He's almost 6 months old (so I've had him for 14 weeks--but it seems like forever!) and he came from Kelly of Wyldthingz (above).

A well bred Savannah will not look like another domestic even at the lower generation (F4 and below) but the size factor is sometimes harder to keep. I have Brigitte's F5 boy "Jobs" here now. He is 7 months and ENORMOUS for 7 months. He is an F5 but I don't think anyone could look at him and think he looked like a domestic.

Thank you Kelly. I do want a big boy. So you're saying the F3 boys are noticeably larger than domestics and usually larger than F4 and below?
