Ringworm is definitely not a death sentence, but it can b a pretty big deal for a pet owner-- PARTICULARLY one with multiple pets already in the house or small children or someone who has a compromised immune system. I know none of you are suggesting it's not a pain in the butt and what you are saying is that it's treatable, but I will say- the day my longhaired Selkirk Rex came to me covered in ringworm spots, I was INFURIATED and SAD and FRUSTRATED!

Now- ringworm happens just like the proverbial sh*t and if that breeder learned from her mistake and never sent home another kitten with discernible ringworm markings on it- then ya know, I'm happy. Crap happens. You live and you learn. Any day, any of us could have to deal with the dreaded ringworm- and hopefully, we're knowledgeable enough not to send a kitten totally covered in spots to a new home.

HOWEVER, if that breeder goes on to repeatedly send home kittens with ringworm to other homes and families, not improving or seeming to improve- then I'm mad.

Because ringworm can be a b*tch to get rid of. AND some homes are not so financially secure that they can afford multiple trips back and forth to the vet JUST for lyme dipping (or what floats your boat as far as ringworm treatment goes) without dipping into their TRUE emergency kitten funds. How is that fair?

I hope your kitten is beautiful and healthy and wonderful all the way around. I hope you never have to see or deal with ringworm- ever ever.

The other questions about URIs and diarrhea are also important to inquire about, but also- take a close look at your kitten. If his eyes are cruddy, if he's super sneezy, lethargic, etc- walk away. As hard as it is-- look at him as closely as you would a new car purchase. Ask a million questions. It won't hurt, I promise, and it might help you in the long run!

Yes there are many success stories including my beautiful melanistic f4 I bought from Martin. The problem is that things don't always go the right way, and it seems that often those stories are the ones that get suppressed when in fact they are the ones that shed the most light on the breeders. It's easy to be happy with a breeder when everything goes well but a breeder's true character is best proven under difficult circumstances. How a breeder treats their customers when something goes wrong, their support of the owners and the cats they raised. Whether they are truly concerned or indifferent. To me as a customer, hearing the bad stories would have been 100 times more helpful because at least I would know going into the breeder/customer relationship, what sort of support i would get in that situation. Again, unfortunately those just aren't the stories that make it to the top.

You are correct, and there is a reticence from people to come forward at times and disclose their experiences, especially when it is in regards to a well known and popular breeder. On the other hand, it happens from time to time that a breeder inadvertently sends out a kitten that ends up sick due to no one's fault. I would hate to see the reputation of a breeder be destroyed because of a single incident that the disgruntled customer decided to exploit...

As for A1, well if you had checked the BBB a year or so ago you would have seen a complaint against them, but no one has filed anything in the last three years so they look pristine.

I totally agree Trish. I know a breeder who had a cat sent to her with ringworm and it took her TWO YEARS to completely irradicate it from her home and cattery - it was a nightmare!!!

From what I understand, unless there is actually a 'spot' of active ringworm on the cat to scrape and examine I don't think you can successfully test for it. In fact I have heard that cats can actually carry the spores on them and be asymptomatic but spread it to others, which is why it is such a nasty bugger to get rid of sometimes. Also, the wood's lamp (ultraviolet light) may or may not pick up the ringworm, and it can also pick up other things that are not ringworm, so not always conclusive one way or the other either...

I did check them on the BBB and yes saw that complaint but all the praise that was floating around otherwise was more than enough for me to ignore that one instance. However after experiencing a particularly bad situation with A1 and Martin himself and only after doing what I had to do to resolve the issue did I realize that the negative stories were being muted one way or another.

And mine from A1 had ringworm. Thanks for the expensive ringworm A1. They never even checked on their kitty. I won't buy from A1 again. Hopefully you don't have any issues with ur new kitty from A1.

I got my two from A1 prior to the recent change of ownership. You can find what I experienced in the threads here. Despite a big mix up and ringworm, all worked out. These SVs are wonderful.
