GOOD NEWS !!!
I think I found the problem. I wasn't sure, and was very carefull with watching her and her babies without the collars.
I wasn't sure, but let me explain my theorie ;)

I realised the day after the incident, mom was having milk congestion. Maybe it was not very swollen the day before, she has a lot of loose skin in the belly. It was very hard and enormous, kittens probalby where hurting her while trying to nurse.

So, I stayed there and forced the kitten to drink where the metritis was, the first one had hard time to even latch on... poor mama, it hurts a lot. The second kitten was victorious, after a good time sipping air, and had a super huge big meal :)

Since then, even if one kitten lost his collar, no more chewing marks....

So I will keep you updated if I am wrong.... if she continues later on.

No, we didn't remove them at 3 weeks of age. As I said, we used bitter lotions and a conehead eventually to keep them with mama until they were eating solids (so 5-6 weeks). Seeing the scarring that Nadiya now has on her ears though, I wonder if we would have done better with separating from mama and having scheduled visits with her for nursing while I was there to keep her from grooming the ears.

If it's only one kitten, maybe this kitten bites mom a bit too hard while nursing ? Just a though ???

I had another queen with the same issue, and she was hissing on her babies nursing, but I could see the problem very fast in her case.

Mastitis :) At least, here in the US- it's mastitis :) And that does make sense- it is a very painful condition for Mom (human and kitty alike!). I'm sure some human moms would like to chomp their little ones when nursing and dealing with mastistis!
