The first original one I purchased gave it up after a little over a years use with the most frequently used litter box. The handle had some stress fractures but all the splines were fine. There has also been some changes to the original so I don't think that would happen again as there is a reinforcement brace on the handle.
As for the size differences between the original and the beamer, they are actually the same size. The original being longer and the beamer being wider. The lateral support of the cat design on the splines should make it sturdier, the scoop sides are deeper and the handle should be more robust. I end up with less gems falling back in the pan with the beamer. The real bottom line is I use either of them without thinking much about it.
