It IS they way of animals. That is a trust thing. Shows an animal trusts another if he allows that sort of delicate exposure. Also, it does say "I wanna be your friend" if I like you well enough to lick your butt. LOL It used to gross me out, until I learned the animal's side of the story. And it is all Animals. ( I won't comment on humans.

LOL. I am not so sure taste is as driving a force for animals as it is for us humans. I think taste is how they determine if their bodies need the nutrients in the particular food. Since butt smelling ( or licking ) is not food, taste does not enter into the equation. They have to ignore the taste of things when they need to. How else could they wash?? But possibly they are rejecting certain foods because it does not contain what their bodies need to fuel itself. (and keep itself trim.) IMO.
