Malibu, Kali & Odrick

I seriously cannot wait to meet him.

The breeder says that he loves playing tug-of-war and that he's "a bit of a bully" at the food bowl. He's going in for his shots on Thursday this week so I'm hoping that I'll get a "due date" ;) some time this weekend because I'm itching for an exact countdown. I think it will be some time the week of Father's Day since he'll be 12 weeks that Monday. I guess we'll just need to see if he seems ready to go then or if he would benefit from hanging out there a little longer.

It is so close though! I feel like the time is passing quickly.

I was just at my vet office, picking up Revolution for Kali. I mentioned that I would be calling next week to make an appt because we're getting a savannah kitten and the girl said that they weren't taking on any new savannah clients. She said they had a couple savannah clients currently but that they get too big and aggressive and the vet doesn't want to accept any new ones. She said she'd ask him though, since I'm an established client and maybe he would make an exception.

I'm totally freaking out. My vet is the only "cat-only" vet in New Orleans and I thought it would he the perfect place for a Savannah. He's always been literally THE BEST at handling my cat, Malibu, who would turn feral at coed dog/cat clinics and need to be sedated for a physical. He never had to be sedated again once we found the cat-only clinic (unless he needed surgery or dentals)

My vet probably thinks I'm a crazy client since I feed a raw diet and don't vaccinate annually (things that he doesn't practice) And now I'm getting a breed that he doesn't want to see any more. I'm legit having a panic attack.

If your vet doesn't like/can't deal with Savannahs you are probably much better off finding a new vet. Also, keep in mind your boy is coming from a breeder with an awesome reputation, and will be well socialized. No panic - all well!

Our boys do fine at the co-species vet, and they've waited with dogs each time - no issues at all. I put a blanket most of the way over their carrier - Bear hides in the back, and Ninja tries to chat with the dogs up front. (Exactly what happens at home when dogs have visited. LOL)

@Ninja-n-Bear thank you for the response. I'm going to take a breather and calm down. Surely, there must be a vet here in the city that will take my Savannah as a client. I'm just going to have to make some phone calls...

ODRICK UPDATE: He went to the vet today for his first round of shots and he weighs 4 pounds (he just turned 9 weeks old on Monday this week)

I remember when I first got Kali when she was a kitten, she weighed one little pound, even. That's it! She was such a cute, tiny fluff-ball and full of energy. Odrick is 4 times that size and still isn't coming home for 3 more weeks so he might be about 5lbs when I finally meet him...practically an adult!!

I'm still freaking out about the vet thing...

I completely agree with this. The Savannah is a domestic cat breed and there's no reason to treat it any other way. If you vet can't handle an active, inquisitive, playful cat then he's in the wrong line of work!

I don't think that's the issue. Two of mine are sedated for their exams. Atticus and Maliik. It is not possible for anyone to handle Maliik. Atticus slaps with claws out and tries to bite to draw blood. It would take me and 2 other people to subdue him for an exam and that is more stressful on the cat and humans than gassing him which ensures that neither cat nor human is harmed. I don't like that we have to do it that way but it's a fact that some domestic animals are dangerous to handle in that situation.

Sounds like you might be better off finding a new vet. If they think a Savannah is too big, what do they do with large dog breeds or even other large cat breeds like Main Coons?

It's important you find a vet you and your fur kid are comfortable with. Our vet is co-species and Shango's never had a problem. I never just carry him inside, but always make sure he's in a carrier or his cat stroller. As long as he feels safe in his carrier/stroller he has no issues passing by large dogs. He sometimes will growl when he hears other dogs bark, but that's about it.

Thank you guys, I have some positive news. I found two veterinarian practices that will be able to see us.

The first vet is a local, holistic vet. I have had consultations with her in the past in regards to my raw diet menu. She said she would be happy to have Odrick as a regular client. However, she is only able to provide wellness checkups, vaccinations, bloodwork, nutritional guidance, holistic solutions and the like.

I posted my "panic attack" on the Savannah Cat Enthusiast FB page a few days ago and a Louisiana breeder contacted me and gave me the name of a clinic where she took her savannah one time for a blood transfusion and she said they were pricy but excellent. The clinic is about 80 miles from me but they are a 24-hour specialist clinic that will be able to offer traditional treatment, surgeries, dentals, specialist care and emergencies. I emailed them yesterday through their website explaining my situation and they responded that they would also be able to accommodate us. This is where I will set up an appointment to have him neutered in the upcoming months and hopefully establish Odrick as a part-time client. I'm feeling relieved that I have this situation under control.

I haven't called my current, primary vet to follow up on if they would make an exception for me. I kind of feel like the vet would have made the exception and cared for Odrick but I don't want to force a breed on them that they obviously aren't excited about. I just don't know if my vet is going to take it personally and get his feeling hurt. I have been going there for the past 7 years and we have a great relationship and have gotten much closer since my sad experience with Malibu recently. He saw me when I was a complete basket case and was so kind and caring throughout the whole situation. I think he would take Odrick as a client because he feels bad for me. However, like I mentioned in a previous post, we do not see eye-to-eye in regards to nutrition and the vaccination schedule. (He believes strongly in annual vaccines and I lean towards once every 3 years).

Maybe I will keep bringing Kali to my current vet and just bring Odrick to the holistic vet and see how things go.
