Morning update, Dino is doing a lot better today. First honk and horfing free night since a week ago. He still has a bit of a cough, but not much.

Still going to leave the boys separated as they were going at it pretty hard. Had to intervene a couple times telling them they'll poke an eye out or that its all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Just super happy right now and pretty much giving them a pass on the carnage being left behind during the morning romp.

Received a call from the vet late yesterday and both Dino and Dooley have tested positive for Bordetella. It's believed that Dooley was the carrier as Dino hasn't been exposed to other cats. Interestingly Dooley just started to display symptoms over the last several days, but not even close to the distress that Dino was in.

Just fortunate this is real easy to treat and I'm relieved it won't take the longer term care that asthma would have required. It can lay dormant in cats for months or years without symptoms, and the vet suggested it could be any of a number of factors that made it take off in Dino.

Lots of stress for both of them with windows finally being open and pollen flying around. Then me being out of town and Dino being very mopey while I'm away. Finally Dooley gets stressed being locked down and his big brother being gone 3 different times before he displays symptoms.

Glad to have a treatment plan laid out and happy that Dooley didn't get to the point of any acute secondary issues.

I'm relieved this is treatable and you are not facing a long term or chronic illness. I'm sad for you John, dealing with health issues in both these cats and I hope they are soon in good health and this is the end of these unpleasant surprises.

I was actually super happy with the news, so don't be sad for me. I've got two great kittens that are going to be back to 100% in no time. The only thing that gives me pause, is with some shared information we could have reached the same conclusion sooner as well as forgoing the endoscopy which would have lightened the load on my wallet.

Dino and Dooley sleeping off their Doxicycline.

So happy to hear it is just Bordetella. I didn't know cats could get it, so I'm not sure its the same as dogs....just basically a cold? They'll be bouncing back in no time!

It's definitely more than just a cold as in Dino's case it nearly completely closed the airway and collapsed his trachea, with gas bubbles there and near the esophagus. It can be life threatening in both dogs and cats, although much rarer in cats. It's asymptomatic so a cat could have Bordetella without symptoms and shed the organism for up to 19 weeks. In theory Dino could have had it since December and this was simply the first time he displayed symptoms.

Anyway, here's a couple links and again the keys are it's asymptomatic, can be shed for up to 19 weeks and can recolonize with bouts of stress.
