Chirps & Massive Headbutts
Thanks Pam. Yesterday, took Shango into the vet performed the neutering. Not surprisingly, he'd developed an infection at the neutering area (it became more swollen/red yesterday). He also had a fever of 103.3F. This was the 1st case my vet had seen in perhaps 10 years. Anyways, he drained the infection and now I'm applying a warm compress every 8 hrs or so per his recommendation (want to keep it somewhat open so draining can occur). It is looking a bit better this AM. In addition, yesterday the vet administered Convenia, which is intended for this type of skin/abscess infection. Still giving him Amoxicillin as well. Also, I got a 12ml syringe and am giving Shango 10-20cc water per day to hydrate him more (my previous 0.5cc was a joke
). But now he's beginning to drink quite a bit of chicken broth, so he's well hydrated. He still isn't eating much, maybe a few slices of cooked chicken per day. He's lost nearly 1 lb so far and I don't think the weight loss is over. It's hard for me to think that all of this is from me neutering him! Arghh.........
This AM, he was much more playful. I think the antibiotics are starting to fight off the infection and quickly. The only thing concerning me, is now I've read all of these reports to post adverse reactions to Convenia. So I'm watching him careful for anything unusual, so far nothing. I've also read many success stories with Convenia. Convenia is slow release for 14 days, but I guess can stay in their system for up to 65 days so I've read. I'm not a huge fan of all of the medications...but when you watch your kitten drop 10% in weight, develop a fever/infection, become lethargic it's quite devastating. So I want to do what ever is best to get him back to normal. I think he's on the right path, but we'll see the next few days. dj
