pet only vs breeder

Before we got Oakley, I was talking to a lady who had 2 savannah kittens. I asked if they came with papers and she said they didn't because the mom was marked as a pet and not a breeder and the cattery they got her from wouldn't change it. Just seemed a little fishy to me

It sounds like someone bred a female that was sold as a pet only. If this was the case...good for the breeder for not changing the paperwork.;>)

yeah she said it was an "oops" litter... I don't see why she didn't get the poor thing fixed if she didn't want kittens!

Yeah...spaying certainly would have prevented the litter. She should be made aware that females do get pregnant if in heat and with an intact male.

There are a few breeders who prefer not to sell any of their kittens as breeders but for the most part, at least with most of the breeders I know, the decision is based more in line with what Deborah described, deciding by comparing a kitten to the written standard, or if the kitten has a nonstandard coat or pattern it will most likely be sold as a pet. I personally would much rather have my kittens all go as pets, but if there is one who I think will excel as a breeder or a show kitten I would rather see it used in that capacity as it will serve to improve the breed, which is one of our goals as breeders (and we can't keep them all ourselves!)

Well, that may be your experience, but it doesn't make it right or wrong for a breeder to decide to sell kittens as pets, regardless of whether they are show/breeder quality or not. Even Ixas or Tau will probably be sold as pets...that is my choice...unless there is a breeder out there who meets my standards for how I wish my kittens to be treated as breeding cats...

For me...personally...I have to say...I have never placed a kitten as a breeder that I would not have used in my own program. I had much rather be accused of placing a kitten as a pet that should have been placed as a breeder..than placing a kitten as a breeder..that should have been placed as a pet;>) Breeder quality is much more than a non standard color or pattern. Give me type any day of the week. Non standard colors(which only applies for showing purpose only) is much easier to work with than a cat with poor type. I can fix the color much easier than I can fix that type.;>) At twelve weeks old I do know what that color is. At twelve weeks the type may or may not end up being there at a year old;>)

No one said it was right or wrong, it is simply personal preference. BTW, I don't know a single breeder who doesn't have standards and expectations for the homes their kittens are going into, whether they are being placed as breeders or pets!

I'm definitely with you on this one Shelby - as Glamouresque said, our cattery name follows any cat we place as a breeder, so it's our reputation on the line.

On her other side, only spots, but it's more her stature and hips and shoulder bones are very visible. Biggest paws of the litter. Love her head, ears with nice ocelli. I am in love with her puffy nose. Could have better contrast, she is not perfect, but I am very curious to see her older.

This is why I spay them before when sold as a pet. It is safer I think and at the same time prevent some spray issu. Nobody will breed my cats in my back.
