I bought my 5 month F6 savannah from a site and seeing the ads with detailed pictures and prices with details from breeder helped me decide which one was for me.
and she is a healthy kitten
I did contact one that didn't have the price listed and there price was out of my ball park and wasted my and there time.
After I found the right kitten for the right price than I contacted the breeder and asked all kinds of questions and felt comfortable going forward to buying.
So seeing the price of cat plus shipping helped me out of a lot of time

Just to offer a perspective from the other side of the negotiations....

Having someone contact me who is not willing to take the time for me to get to know then and decide if they can offer a suitable home for a Savannah, or if I have a suitable Savannah for their family is a big red flag to me.

I purposely don't post prices for a couple of reasons. First, as a kitten matures I may decide it is worth more or less than I was originally intending to ask, based on how it's developing (type and personality). Second, I like to reserve the right to change the price based on my interview of the potential home. The last thing I want to do is scare off what otherwise appears to be a great family simply because they see a price and decide before even contacting me that they can't afford my prices. On the flip side, if I get a bad vibe I will quote top dollar to discourage someone from pursuing getting a kitten from me (if that doesn't work and I really don't think it's a good match I will tell them so, but that can be awkward so would rather use less personal means to do it if possible).

No, but by then I was pretty experienced in the ins and outs of SVs and had a range already in mind. And Sue was the first breeder I asked up front for a ballpark figure and I still felt uncomfortable doing that. Perhaps my discomfort stems from reading so many breeders' comments about how annoyed they get when they're asked up front about price. We purchasers are between a rock and hard place -- don't want to appear to just be numbers oriented and offend a breeder, yet want to know how much the cat will cost. And while some breeders may reduce their price occasionally to get the cat into a good home, just as many will not budge and are insulted at the thought. So like everything else, there are at least 2 sides to every situation and we will have our personal preferences for approaching them.

I just got completely torn apart for questions regarding pricing from a breeder who has never sold and bred a single kitten before this litter.. not only by the breeder who called me a liar because I said most first time breeders with a first litter sell their kittens for much cheaper than they normally are going for.. she called me a liar and said I did not read that on this site.. even though I read it ON THIS THREAD. I'm sorry but pricing is VERY important. I do want a friend and companion animal but SOME breeders are really REALLY some of the MOST arrogant I have ever seen.. they treat you like an awful monster because you have the nerve to question their thousand dollar price tags.. no.. I'm sorry I wouldn't buy a car without asking questions.. I'm sick of the way some attack us customer's for trying to research and question.... It really is what makes the savanna buying process so hard.. breeders who do not want to share prices, and buyers who don't want to get ripped off.. kinda makes it hard to shop around when breeders treat us to his way..

Pricing is not typically based on whether or not a breeder is new, it is based on the quality and pedigree of the kitten. The breeder has no influence over these qualities, whether they've had one, or twenty litters in the past.

Honestly, I know of very few Savannah kittens that are priced under $1000, even F5 or later. You can sometimes find an older kitten or a retired breeder for less than that though. Please keep in mind that there is no such thing as 'bargain' shopping when it comes to Savannahs. You get what you pay for, so if you think you've found a bargain please research it very thoroughly.

I still don't see what you are talking about as far as prices on this thread. MOST breeders do NOT sell their kittens cheaply whether they are first time breeders or not...it all depends on type, personality, breeder, etc.

Yes, some breeders are arrogant, most are not - just like some buyers are arrogant - most are not - it works both ways. I love questions and helping out, but if a buyer starts to question my integrity and ethics, that is not acceptable to me.

I do not know what happened in this case - so far we are only hearing your side and as we all know, there are two sides to every story.

Just move on...no need to keep disparaging this breeder - we do not allow that here...we can try to help you the best we can, but I am not going to continue to allow this convo regarding a new breeder. Please don't make me start to lock all these threads. I have better things to do with my time.

I completely agree with Patti. Just because a breeder is new, doesn't mean they won't have great quality kittens. It's not the breeder that determines the quality of the litter, it's the quality of the cats they are breeding and whether or not certain traits will be passed on.

I personally do not think you can judge a kitten based on whether the breeder is new or has been doing it for years. Good breeders take pride in their kittens and want to make sure they are going to a good home. If anything, they are the ones who are judging the potential buyers (more so when being a 1st time Savannah owner). It can also come across very offensive when questioning a breeders prices when you don't think their kittens are worth what they are asking. When shopping for my early generation Savannah, all of the prices were in the same ball park whether the breeder was newer or had been doing it for several years. If anything, I actually found prices were higher on the bigger catteries that had been breeding longer and are well known.

Also, if you're looking for a male F5, the ones I found had much higher price tags because they were being sold with breeding rights. If you find a male F5 kitten priced under $1000 from a good breeder that is close to the breed standard, I'd consider yourself very lucky.

Our melanistic F5 sbt boy was $950... Plus $250 for shipping... 5 years ago. He was, and remains, underpriced. He is lovely, sweet, and friendly. We were working with the breeder for about two months before we picked him, to select the right kitten. We liked the breeder. The breeder liked us. They offered him to us because they thought he would be a good fit for us. He is close to breed standard, but not quite there- his tail is so long it drags on the ground if he doesn't hold it up.

Our F4 boy, Mickey Blue Eyes, is non-standard. He is a snow. He was $1250, plus shipping.

Our breed standard, BST F2 baby girl and F3 boy were much more.

You don't really tend to find Savannah kittens for less than $1000. If you do, it is probably a lower generation A or B kitten, or is a non-standard, or a kitten with a "flaw" (like my F5 boy's long tail).

We all have budgets, but there just are not many SV kittens under $1000 from a reputable breeder. Personally, a healthy well socialized kitten is much more important to me than a cheap kitten. IMHO, take your time. Find your breeder, then find your kitten. The price is what it is. Believe me, it is worth it for the love you get in return from a healthy, happy, well socialized kitty.

I am new to this Savannah world! And have fallen in love with them! I have had my 2 for about a year now. And I have learned so much from my babies, and from doing research and from my breeders help too!!
I am now a new breeder myself, I guess I can say? I have read lots thru your chats to seek out advice and info....My F5 Mom has 6 pefect babies. Beautiful Markings! Also thanks to the purebred Dad! So I am always seeking out advice and info on how best to go about things, when they are old enough to go to a new home! And a good home definitely means more (as it should) than the money you make from a kitten. Any direction/advice out there would be greatly appreciated!

Congratulations on your new litter! Breeding can be very rewarding, and very heartbreaking. There is a Savannah Mentor's Facebook group I would recommend you join - they are there specifically to help you as a new breeder, and answer your questions.
