I think it all depends on the the individual cat...

Honestly there are only a few savannah kittens/cats being shown in TICA, so I do not really take that into account when choosing a kitten...

Yes, I show and one of my kittens was a best savannah kitten also (Orion)...but I would never want to take away from some of the most gorgeous kittens that people never show.

My F4 girl, Zuri is more than enough to handle...she is exotic looking, fits the standard better than many F3's and can be a handful ;) So...an F4 may be just what you are looking for...

Just FYI, I have an F5 SBT, Kilifi, who is quite the Savannah girl. She has some ear scars from a kittenhood disease, but she is still very Savannah.

Yes, many F5's and later are just as exotic looking...the later generations are really coming into their own now...

Hi Patti. Dang, that's a huge price for the export. I didn't expect this but was also not considering this as of now, for reasons you already mentioned. Nevertheless the US has a lot more breeders for Savannahs and therefore more experiences they can share, and luckily that they actually share in this forum.

I didn't expect at the beginning that the variety of look etc can be so dramatically different between the generations. That doesn't make it any easier to find the right cat of course because if you have to potentially check out all available generations on the market you've a completely different number of cats, compared to focus on F3. But of course I understand why this is the case, with the breed being so young and breeders learning new things every day. I think that's part of the process every breed goes through. Benefit of this is of though, that there are more potential cats available that might fit what I'm looking for.

What I noticed between the US and (at least) Germany is, that in Germany most Savannahs go with silver color, while I have the impression that most kittens in the US are gold. Is this right for the US or did I just not see enough breeder pages in the US to see the variety of colors there?

It may just be the photos you are looking at...I have not noticed that at all...it could be you are seeing more of the cool BST's, as in my photos of Zuri than silver...

Right. That's why I was asking. I barely have an overview about the US Savannah market. Maybe it's also just selective perception, because I'd prefer BST over silver, if I had the choice. Not saying that Silver or snow is not beautiful.

One breeder I'm in contact with is expecting kittens today or tomorrow (if the cat stays in the 65 day time frame). F3, most likely Silver. Will definitely check them out and hope to find the one I'm looking for. If that's the case the most painful time will start afterwards. Waiting for at least 12 weeks until I'm able to pick it up. *urgh*

She's definitely a very cute one. I'd take her if I could. :)

I don't think anyone has mentioned the non-standards yet. When we talk about type, mostly we're talking about how close the body of the SV matches that of the serval. There are many different varieties of coat colors and patterns to be found in SVs some of which are breed standard and some which are not. But even with those that are not considered breed standard, we still want to see a typey body.

You can sometimes get a non-standard SV at a lower cost than standard. Not always, sometimes. If the cat has a very typey body, it may cost as much or more than a standard.

So if you want golden coat with black spots that's perfectly fine. But also consider a non-standard if you come across one. I would rather have a non-standard typey SV than a golden coated spotted one lacking the ear set, face shape, body type of the breed standard.

Welcome to the forum!
We are lucky enough to share our lives with three boys, f 3c, f4, and f5 SBT. All three of our boys were purchased from the A1 Savannah's you previously mentioned, before Martin and Kathrin sold:)

F3 Jarvis is bst. F4 Mickey is a snow. F5 diablo is melanistic. Diablo was our first SV, and he is my little (15 pound) shadow. Literally almost never leaves my side. He is the kitty that made us think buying more SV kitties was a good idea, he is such a wonderful cat.

To be honest, f3, f4, and f5 cats all make fantastic pets. Our f5 boy is the smartest and most coordinated, and he and f4 Mickey are much more demonstrative than F3 Jarvis. Jarvis is really makes us work for it, but we love all three dearly.
