Savannah Kitten Fell Into the Bathtub

Did the kitten behave like he was stressed when you let him out into the rest of the house? Most kittens find it exciting and new, they might be anxious as it is a larger space but not usually react in such a negative way. I would suspect this is not a stress reaction, it sounds really extreme to me for that and I would more likely think he has an infection that a visit to your vet is going to help with.

I think he's going to have to go back to seclusion from your other cats though for a bit!

Was it a bubble bath he fell in? Or was there any soap in the water? That could cause vomiting and diarrhea as well.

Hello Patti,

I had responded to your message last night, but my computer crashed right away; I guess it took my reply with it.

I did take Zuri to the vet yesterday morning. She could not see anything clinically wrong - although he is still sneezing, but no discharge and no telltale sounds from his lungs. She palpated his abdoment quite extensively and he did not complain at all; the vet did not feel any sort of obstruction. His temp was on the high side of normal as well. (Do Savannah's run hot?)

Anyways, she put him on Metronidazole (1/2 of a 50mb tab) twice a day to see if things improve. He has not had diarreah or thrown up since yesterday morning and I started him on boiled chicken mixed with broth (1/2 cup per day only) as of noon yesterday. This afternoon I added 1/2 tsp of his canned, wet food to the chicken mix and he tolerated that well. He's as hungry now as he always is - he is a good eater. He has been peeing just fine but has not pooped yet...of course that worries me as well, but hopefully I will see something in the litterbox by the morning. (Is this normal after a bout of diarreah and how long should I wait for a poop before I get him back to the vet?)

He is crazy-playful and I am very hopeful that things are getting back to normal. We have really tried to minimize his stress and are still keeping him mostly quarantined (with several daily jaunts downstairs to visit our other cats, and the rest of the family).

I do appreciate your advice....next step...a normal poop - well, ANY poop would be good.

There was a bit of bubblebath in the tub; a totally chemical-free one though.....although the diarreah didn't start until 4 days after he fell in the tub (but the vomiting started an hour afterwards).

Hi Brigitte, he did not behave like he was stressed...he was pretty darn excited about the whole thing. I do have two children though, and both are young....Zuri did not come from a household with children, so maybe mine are going to take more getting used to! We never totally released him fro his quarantine, but only bring him out here and there during the day. We have definitely pulled back though and he is spending more time in his quarantine room right now...although LOL, I think he is going to break the door down -- he is so very tenacious about getting out of that room! The vet has him on Metronidazole now, and he has not vomited nor had diarreah since yesterday morning, so all fingers are crossed. Thank you so much for your advice.

Hopefully the metronidazole is all that is needed then to bring him around and it shall be all good from now on! Glad he is doing well

When you say that you are feeding chicken with broth, it's not canned broth that contains onions or garlic is it? Just wanted to check that...

No - it was all home made...nothing added but water. How long do you think I should wait for a poop? He has not pooped since Saturday.

A little bit of canned plain pumpkin might help get things going.

I'm glad to hear he's doing better. I wouldn't worry about him not pooping until it's been three days, then you might want to check with your vet...

If the baby had an upset tummy.......I think he probably cleaned himself out pretty darned good. Rest assured you will see results in the litter box in the near future;>) If he is eating, keeping it down and seems to be feeling fine..know that what goes in will come out in due time;>) I hope all is fine from her on out.
