I have thought about letting my two boys run free outside. In my childhood we had indoor/outdoor cats and they seemed so happy. BUT - they were moggies. My two cats are so beautiful and friendly my #1 fear is that someone else would steal them lol! Also, they aren't street smart... would get hit by a car I am sure if someone did not pick them up first.

I had a DSH that was part time "free" outside. But where I live it's an island, and on a dead end, and not much place to go, and he only went out for a few hours a day while I was home. He mostly sat on the porch.

Ragdolls, however, I don't think are equipped to deal with anything. I'm sure this isn't true of Solo, but Dante is sort of what I call my little autistic boy, he is waaay too friendly and trusting and not very good at problem solving (not to mention not a very discriminating eater of inedibles lol). Once day he did get out of the house and got trapped in a strange little fenced in area down the street, no idea how he got in...my DSH -- without whom I'd never have found Dante -- and I tried to give him instruction on how to get out, but he was so helpless and just sat there and cried in between feeble attempts (it was actually interesting and funny to watch him!) to escape. In the end after waiting hours for him to figure a way out, I had to climb the fence to rescue him.

Duma is just a baby, but I couldn't imagine letting him roam, he is just too curious. And as others have said, even if I knew he'd come back, he'd probably bug the neighbors.

I recently got a roommate (yes, a human lol) who thinks I'm cruel not letting them roam outside, but they get plenty of time in the fenced in garden, time on the leash, and there are windows everywhere. Why adopt a precious gift and then leave it out in the rain to rust? That's my argument lol One of my neighbors did that, it makes me so sad.

I agree with you completely.....They can get hurt, lost, catnapped....or get some serious illness. Just not a good idea.

Or they can get attacked by vicious birds....like doves. My 18 yr old DSH is allowed to free roam in the back yard. She's too old to jump over a fence and just toddles around to find a patch of sun. One day I was watching her through the window and she toddles over to sit under the bird feeder. A Mourning Dove waddled over to her and started whapping her on the head with its wing. Poor kitty didn't know what to do. She just sat there looking at me with her eyes real big and I had to rescue her from that cat abusing bird. I tried not to laugh as she is a very proud kitty but it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

When I worked at the vet, we had a client that told us about the only time his poor fat Persian got out. The cat saw this turkey chick (we have lots of wild turkeys here) that was wandering though the yard. He started stalking the chick. From somewhere behind him, mamma turkey went on the war path and pummeled him with her wings. He flew into the house in fright, never to venture out again. I wish I could borrow that bird!

Turkeys can be scary! They scared the bejeebus out of Elijah & his little friend last year at a little farm we went to. lol
