Savannah Outside

My favorite girl (a DSH) loves going outdoors on a harness and leash to eat grass. When she sees her pink harness, she gets very excited and talks up a storm about going out :) One fine afternoon, my fiance and I were sitting on the front porch, enjoying our coffee and cigarettes (no comments, please ;) while Moki grazed near us on the lawn. We were enjoying watching the various birds and butterflies in the garden....then noticed a very large bird circling far overhead. As it neared our house, we could see it was a bald eagle. I knew there were a pair of eagles living in the park at the end of our street, so the sight was not unexpected but still rare. We watched it for a while calmly circling above, marveling that such a magnificent bird would live in town...then it dropped and flew around our very tall oak tree in the front yard, and on its second circuit, the eagle turned its head back and eyed my forgotten kitty...I screamed, flew off the porch, grabbed Moki and ran with her into the house while Ol' Baldy flew away...disappointed, I believe, that I foiled his dinner plans. I was so shaken by that experience that I have not brought another cat outside since that day. I've been told that I was incredibly lucky the eagle did not grab Moki that hot summer day. I often wonder now if the eagle or its mate were responsible for the slow disappearance of all the neighborhood strays...I estimated once around 12-15 cats; now there are none. I also wonder if the eagle knew that quiet dead-end street was a source of food, and I was just damn lucky he didn't get one last meal.....

Or they can get attacked by vicious birds....like doves. My 18 yr old DSH is allowed to free roam in the back yard. She's too old to jump over a fence and just toddles around to find a patch of sun. One day I was watching her through the window and she toddles over to sit under the bird feeder. A Mourning Dove waddled over to her and started whapping her on the head with its wing. Poor kitty didn't know what to do. She just sat there looking at me with her eyes real big and I had to rescue her from that cat abusing bird. I tried not to laugh as she is a very proud kitty but it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
How old is your oldest one?

I like the idea of a walking jacket and leash, but I'm not sure about it being an outdoor thing. I don't want them to get use to going outside. We have plenty of large windows they can get fresh air and sun and the house is 3000 sq. ft. so they have plenty of room to run, play and explore. Just doesn't seem worth the risk to me, but I am torn on an outdoor enclosure. Seems like it would just be a nice environment. The man suggested building something off a window so they could go out if they want to. Just don't know.

Laura, I like that idea...it would give them the best of all worlds...I was actually going to try and set my new one up off the sliding glad doors, but decided not to. I just have to walk Taj because he is so happy walking on his leash and I don't want to take that away from him.

I figure, the can't miss what they don't know, but is it fair to take the outside away is the question I deal with. Being inside with windows and fresh air or out in beautiful weather, it's even different for us. Sometimes I think we over think things! :)

I used to feel the same way you did as far as what they don't know, they won't miss and many people feel that way. But every time I take him outside and see how happy is he just to be walking and chasing bugs and pouncing on them or to see him watching the birds and and stalking them or sauntering up to peple to be petted and loved, I am happy I made the decision to get a harness and leash.

Zuri, on the other hand, loves being outside, but doesn't whine and howl to go out like Taj.

Savannah 500. Update on my new savannah girl. My cat is really settling in. She is getting along with my other cats and is staying loose in the house when were gone. She is starting to show us some love when we come home and is loading up on us. I have started to let her on the pool cage and she loves that I call it the Savannah 500 as i am sure she has gone around the pool that many times. Thanks for all the advice you gave me.
