I had played a pre-birth deposit on a kitten fro Snow Canyon Savannah's who throw very good looking kittens also but Shango is so exceptional I'm having second thoughts and may look into Select. If all seems equal it may just come down to which breeder is easiest to work with. I've gotten to know Jannel at Snow Canyon and she is great and has her kittens underfoot in her home. Could you clue me in on select's breeder.

To be honest, my 1st kitten Kai (my avatar pic) from SE ended up having FIP and passed away at only 5 months old... very heartbreaking experience. Holly was very understanding and there were zero problems with her honoring our contract. Instead of a partial refund, I opted to get a replacement kitten. I was given 1st pick of any F2 litter and Holly kept in contact with me via text or email each time a litter was born and would send me pictures before posting any online. I wasn't ready for another kitten for a while as I was still grieving so I passed on close to 20 kittens until I was finally ready. After the holidays, Holly had contacted me since there were 5 F2 litters born around Christmas (2015) and there ended up being 4 boys and several girls. Any of the girls (as pets) or 3 of the boys, she would've replaced at no additional cost since she considered them to be of equal value/quality to Kai. Instead I chose Shango even though he ended up costing me a little bit more money. It was hard to pick a new kitten since they were only a little over a week old and all looked so similar so I relied a lot on Holly's expertise as to how she expected them to develop based on the breeding pair and other siblings. She was spot on with how great she expected Shango to turn out, at least IMO. While he was on the much higher price range of a F2... actually priced closer to a F1, I have no regrets and LOVE my fur kid.

I would have no hesitation to buy another kitten from SE, but they probably wouldn't be my 1st choice. If there ever comes a time when I feel like Shango would enjoy having another playmate (other than myself), I've had my eye on a few of the breeders on this forum and would go with one of them instead. While SE does produce some great kittens, they are one of the much larger catteries (part of why they always have kittens available) and are definitely more of a business. I've noticed their prices are on the higher side and they don't really seem to care who they are selling to. Pretty much, if you have the money you can have a kitten. A lot of the smaller breeders, like the ones of this forum, you can tell aren't in it for the money. They do what they do for the love of the breed and are concerned about the welfare of their kittens instead of treating the process like a basic sales transaction. To them you are adopting a new family member and they want to make sure the kitten is a good match for its new home and they are also there to offer support after the sale. While SE was easy to deal with when there was a problem, there was never really much support when it came to basic questions or responses when I'd send updates on how well Shango was doing. To me it seemed like once the kitten was sold and shipped to its new home, it was then forgotten about as far as SE was concerned. I guess that's fine, but being a 1st time Savannah owner I would have preferred a breeder who offered more support. Luckily there is this wonderful forum with lots and lots of useful information.

Sorry for such a long post, but I guess a lot of the choice comes down to what you expect out of the breeder.

Don't complain at all about the length of your post because you just pretty much confirmed everything I felt about this breeder after reading some of her positive and negative reviews on Facebook and the fact that she sold you a kitten with FIP which is so common in catteries and if she and her husband are geneticist as they claim to be should have been aware of some of their cats being either symptomatic/asymptomatic or just carriers. I'm very happy to hear she acted in an ethical fashion and replaced the kitten and I'm thrilled that Shango is healthy and has such a loving human mommy.

I just wanted to point out that FIP is not that common and most people who purchase kittens from SE (or any other breeder) will not have their kittens develop FIP. FIP is caused by certain strains of the coronavirus and it is estimated that over 80% of cats are exposed to the coronavirus at some time during their life. Only a small percent of cats infected with the coronavirus will progress to FIP due to the virus mutating. Of course cats in multiple cat households and large catteries like SE are at a much higher risk than single cat households. Unfortunately there isn't a way to test for FIP or for certain strains of the coronavirus so I don't hold it against the breeder. Even if a cat were to test positive, it doesn't mean it has been exposed to one of the strains that could mutate to FIP. I do hope that if they have multiple kittens develop FIP from the same breeding lines they will retire those cats from their breeding program. I am just glad that Shango is healthy and hasn't had any health issues.

It was an exhausting day today... Shango went to the vet for his annual check-up and FVRCP booster shot... he was NOT very happy about going  I also had them do blood work just to have it on file to compare to if he were to ever get sick in the future. He did great with the shot, somewhat tolerated having blood drawn, then completely refused to cooperate for a nail trimming. He won  They'll trim his nails next week when I take him in for his rabies shot. He's now up to 18.6# and is not very easy to handle when he's upset.

Luckily my boy is very healthy and everything was normal with blood results (y)

So cute! He is spoiled with that cat bed!
Not sure what I was thinking when I bought it... it very clearly specified 46" diameter in the description online. I just didn't really think about how big that would be. It almost takes up a queen size bed lol! I put it on the floor at night, but keep it on the bed during the day to give Shango more room to play. Once we get moved into the new house there will be lots more room for it though. I'm just glad he actually uses it and can even stretch out on it since it's so big.

I bought the same dang bed. Apparently I thought I had a pride of lions instead of 2 house kitties. I literally have no place to put it so it is still in the box after a year!

Nice Bed, Shango looks content laying on it.

I have one boy that would love such a bed and another that would destroy it.

Shango is starting to stress mommy out. He was supposed to get his rabies shot and nails trimmed today or tomorrow, but I've postponed for the time being. Starting Tuesday morning he will no longer eat his Darwin's raw turkey which was his primary diet. Hopefully later today I will confirm with Darwin's if they changed their formula without notifying me. He was eating perfectly up until Monday night which is also when I gave him the last of the 2016 turkey. Now that I'm trying to offer him some from 2017, he refuses to eat it. He was at the vet last Friday and blood work was good. I don't think it's a reaction to the booster shot because that was late Friday morning and he was eating fine until Tuesday morning.

Guess I'll be making a trip into town soon to get more Stella & Chewy's dehydrated food. It's too expensive to use long term as his primary diet, but for the time being it'll work since he's eating it along with Fresh is Best chicken & duck treats. He's not a huge fan of wet food and I've only been able to get him to eat 2-3 oz a day, but he's always been like that with wet food so it's not unusual. Sigh... if only he could talk and tell me why he won't eat the raw turkey anymore
