She calls herself a rescue?!

Even better, tell the IRS they are tea party members!

History shows this will work. :) It really is sad that petsmart is allowing this and as brigitte said should really be more concerned about it. The most I have seen for an adoption fee is 200-300 and that was if a random purebred cat somehow ended up in a rescue as a kitten. It's hard to say if the IRS would do anything about this, as it may be the digression of the charity to choose however much they want as an adoption fee, as long as they have a reason for it. In regards to the rare breed part, most people don't know the majority of cat breeds so if you told them a scottish fold was a rare breed they would nod their heads and move a long. While savannahs may not be rare these days, I've still never seen one in person, so it would stand that the average person that hasn't spent 7 months researching them would find them to be the most amazing thing they have ever seen. At least I would ;).

Unfortunately the IRS doesn't really track things like this down. They just don't have the staff for it and time would be better invested in some other tactic to stop this practice. Letting PetSmart corporate know about it would be a much better tact and probably put an end to it.

When you talk to the Petsmart employees again and they say "it's a rare breed" tell them that no, it is currently the 4th most registered breed in TICA! And has been for two years running. It's a relatively new breed but it is not rare by anyone's standards anymore.

I think Petsmart should be very very concerned about someone charging $1,000 for an adoption fee.

Want to give us the Branch name that this has gone down at...? I'd like to write my own letter to them...
Certainly!! It is the Lakewood branch. I don't want to sound a snob, but that town isn't exactly known for being the most classy..... There is always someone there trying to take others for their money it seems! It didn't really surprise me much when I saw the location. :/
Oh and he said something about purebred cats costing more, that they won't be as cheap as other cats... But.... $1000?? He told me she rescued them and I said oh ok, so she got them for free right? He said yes...... And I said and then she's reselling them for $1000 a piece.... Interesting. And he didn't say any more :) he just basically had the attitude it is what it is, and didn't see anything wrong with it. I got the impression he thought they were....valuable. Even though he is just a worker he should know that's not right, and Petsmart is supposed to have pets there for adoption, with reasonable rehoming fees.... Not breeder prices.

IF you could get the IRS to look into it...they'd have to show their expenses as well as their income, and that's where you'd prove that they were reselling cats, the line item saying "SV Purchases" lol. Reselling<>rescuing. Pretty simple. But getting the IRS to do anything, unless you know someone to contact, well, good luck.

Still might be worth a shot....http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/How-Do-You-Report-Suspected-Tax-Fraud-Activity?

Indeed! When Savannah Rescue has had huge vet bills we have not transferred that to the adoption fee, we have fundraised to help pay for those vet bills. And our community has always helped thankfully... but charging $1,000 for a rescued animal would not sit well with us. Especially when that $1,000 is likely a very high price for those kittens if we considered their "market value"...unregistered lower gen kittens that don't come with a genetic health guarantee?

Thanks for the Petsmart location, Alice, I'm going to see how easy it is to contact Petsmart Corporate about this situation...

Seeing something like this makes me so mad. I have a big trust issue with rescue organizations ever since I fostered a border collie that was going to be put down for being "too high energy" when she was 1 year. It drives me crazy when something that is supposed to be good turns so bad for money. An amazing rescue that saved hundreds of animals a year was closed down because they couldn't get a charity status, and yet "rescues" like this continue to exist. SMH

Fantastic, thanks! I am trying to help as well, I am just still so swamped at work from being gone last week, I am still working like mad to catch up. :(
I don't have as much time to follow up as I would like! Will try to get on it during lunch break though :)
