They shouldn't be on any medication, that is not advised as animals that are sedated tend not to regulate their body temperature very well... hence in the cargo hold where they are not regularly supervised it could be quite dangerous!
Kittens are shipped in climate controlled cargo holds. I personally think for the most part it is easier to fly than to drive unless flying requires several transfers, because it is quicker so less traumatic for the kitten. Even picking up the kitten and flying can be less comfortable because the space under the seats is much smaller than a shipping crate, and let's face it - you are a stranger so won't be much comfort to the poor little tyke.
Sedating animals is strictly forbidden on any airline I've shipped on before. I have had kittens have accidents before but most of the time even kittens will wait until they have access to a litter box.I haven't ever had a kitten flown, but isn't it true that they get some nice vet meds to help calm and relax them first? If so that should help ease it a lot. I always worry about potential potty accidents mid flight =/ especially on an 8+ hour flight. I'm sure the breeders here will have more input than I know, just throwing some assumptions out there
