Spay/Neuter rant

My f3 wasn't neutered when I picked him up from the breeder, so I had to have it done. I think it is more convenient that the breeder has it done already then I don't have to worry about the surgery and have the extra cost to pay, especially if I'm getting a F1.:)

Our vet will spay/neuter as early as 3lbs but prefers to wait until kittens are 5lbs. Chongo came from the breeder on the young side, was intact and only 3lbs. We held off until he tipped the scales at 5lbs and he was recovered from surgery by the time he got home. They had asked us to keep his activity level down, and despite even our vet thinking her advise was somewhat laughable, she followed up with "well do your best" as he was bouncing off the walls of the carrier.

JMO, but if I had to wait until a kitten was 16 weeks old to get a breeder provided spay/neuter I am probably going somewhere else. At the same time I would have liked it to have been done so I didn't need to worry about it. There were definitely GI issues that had to be sorted out from weeks 8-12, after that no issues and it would have been some good times missed with our kitten growing up. Some tough times along the way as well, but definitely imprinted by our home and it's occupants.

Our vet does it at 2 pounds- we hold off until 3. Which is EASY with the F2s- they are easily over 3 pounds. It is a bit of a crapshoot with the F6s.

TYPICALLY, our little ones make it home around 12.5 weeks :D

I must add- though- I do have it in my contract that I can keep the kitten up to two weeks longer then stated date of going home- in case there are any issues with spay/neuter or in case we need a bit more time for growth. So far- knock on wood- we haven't needed to use that extra time, but it's nice to have it and nice that the owners know about it in advance.

I think my vet does the S/N at 3 pounds...so with F5's it is a bit different....my males were all about 5 pounds at 10 weeks, but Cinny was not...luckily she stayed here though ;)

Trish, that sounds like an excellent practice and I applaud you for sticking by your guns.

So now can you figure out something that we disagree on so we can make the fur fly?

My breeder asked us if we wanted our 2d and 3d kittens neutered before they arrived. The breeder gave us the option for the F3 boy I would like to say because they trusted us, but likely because F3s boys are sterile, and with the F4 boy, I think she probably gave us the benefit of the doubt because we bought three kittens in 2 years and kept communications open about how the older two were progressing, but I really don't know. With the F3 boy, he was way to tiny at the time. With the F4 boy, the breeder held him until he was large enough (in the vet's eyes), and then neutered, then sent him home two weeks later, per our request. I think that asking can work well in the right circumstances, but with a person such as described in the OP, I don't think I would trust that person enough to ask. At the end of the day, I think it should be the breeder's choice, as it is the breeder's kitten until it leaves :)
