Researching silica gel packets reveals the silica in itself is not particularly toxic, but any dyes added, in particular cobalt dichloride, a known carcinogen...may be dangerous, as well as the source the silica packet is found in. Those packets found in drug or medications may have absorbed some of the medication, which in turn can have a detrimental effect on an animal who has ingested the silica. The packets are commonly found in shoes, electronics and medications and are used as a dessicant (moisture-wicking product).

I am so sorry, John. I will be praying. Silica isn't toxic, though. It is an adsorbent and if a human eats it, the only thing that will happen is they will be very, very dry and thirsty. They say do not eat because of the chocking hazard. It shouldn't be toxic to cats, either unless a huge amount is eaten, perhaps because Elsa is so little she is suffering. It would create stomach upset, and the big concern normally is intestinal blockage due to absorbing moisture. I only know this because I worked at the plant that makes 90% of the silica for those packets for 8 years (hr and labor). Make sure the vet is aware of the blockage issue, if not already, and the need to hydrate.

Again, very worried for you and will keep looking for updates on our precious girl.

That they are. When Chongo had broken his hip and when he had my full attention all he wanted to do was play. His persistence wasn't real conducive to his recovery after surgery, but in Elsa's case just what the Doctor ordered. Again, my thoughts are with you and hope she is well soon.

I gave my kitty an extra hug last night. Yes, can't watch them every second, and from their height and perspective they would see things on the floor or laying around that we would not. Kitty is almost 10 months old and she finds MANY MANY things to get into. I've not found motivation to re-do my art studio before, but I have been KITTY PROOFING ART STUDIO FOR 3 weeks now. Want to make it safe for her to have full run of it like she does the entire house and us! Ha ha laughable but SO SO SO TRUE!
I agree with John.... Her persistence will get her through this! WE'RE ALL PULLING FOR YOU ELSA!
