If you are able to monitor it during the day, you may find that the same toy that's in the bowl moves from room to room.
I feel this is how they behave with a favorite object, if it's portable enough, they will keep it in one of two places. Where they interact with you, or where they interact with food and water.
There are two types of toys my Mau crosses love the most, the three blind mice that have feather/fluffy/yarn tail styles and come 3 to a pack and the fluffy mice with a velcro opening into the abdomen to stuff cat nip into that are 1 in each pack with a small tube of questionable cat nip potency.
I've caught both of them going upstairs or downstairs with the cat nip mice in their mouth, carrying it around like a dog does a bone. They relocate the toys to the room they prefer to be in and it varies per day. One day, they are all downstairs close to the kitchen, food dish, and Drinkwell 360. Other times, they are all carried upstairs to the floor of the master bedroom where 2/3rds of their time and most of my time at home is spent playing with them, working on the computer, or watching movies.
I bet if you just moved the toy off to the side but left it there, they would move it on their own to another location and odds are, that's going to be one of their favorite spots.
Edit #1: The three blind mice and the cat nip ones are the favorites for the prey-toss. They will use their mouth and neck to fling the toy 3-4 feet diagonal into the air and then bounce after to catch it mid-air, shake it, and then repeat tossing it. Sometimes, they fling it hard enough that it travels 6-7 feet up and 6-7 feet sideways where it will land in a spot that causes additional mischief.

Da Bird is simply not a "game" and it's more like "game on" for hunter instincts. They enjoy it, but god help you if you get in the way.
