Bigger than the declawing issue I think, is the issue that the OP has a serval they aren't certain they can legally own.

I would say that, so long as the law doesn't forbid that kind of exotic pet, I'd say it's ok...

Wasn't referring to you in particular Rob though the timing of my post may have made it seem that way. Philosophical differences are bound to happen from time to time and as our membership grows, I expect we'll be privy to quite a few differences of opinion. I respect vehemence when it is delivered without malice aforethought.

I don't understand the mindset: In order to fit HIM into MY household, he has to be mutilated?

Perhaps your household is not a proper place for this poor little baby.

Sorry, but reading this made me a bit sick to my stomach.

Yup agree, somehow cutting up a cat so it fits your domestic ideals and into a household the obviously is clueless and just not the right enviorment shouldn't own a serval in the first place.

Plus:
How can you own a serval and NOT KNOW IF ITS LEGAL? WTF!

What breeder would be that neglagent, the fights we are all trying to keep our pets only to have people like this who obviously should not own one of these wonderful animals. We've spent the past 2 years just learning laws, looking into research and I don't see how people can be so careless.

Couldn't agree more Julie, the laws are pretty simple, I guess some people don't know how to use google or how to simply call their local something place who knows the rules...

And the bigger picture, outside of the law, they know they can't control, they know will have conflicts with their other pets...The truth is, I can understand declawing if a cat truly is unmanageable, but this OP isn't even trying. What is the point? To start a zoo of maimed animals?

I'm being civil here. If I really spoke my mind...

Please, forum peeps! This person came to us for advice. Many people are completely unaware of the actual declaw process; once upon a time it was very common to declaw all cats as a matter of routine. And it's entirely probable she did not know about any possible legal issues before buying her serval kitten, and only learned when she asked her vet. It's also entirely possible the breeder did not inform her of any legal issues in order to make a sale....as Brigitte stated, let's be civil and not chastise her or scare her away....she came to us for help, not insults. I am sure, with education and guidance she will do what is best for the kitten; I certainly wish her well!

I don't know. It seemed more like the OP came here for support for their point of view. When that didn't happen, the OP got defensive and cited "this is what we have always done" as if that is justification.

Duma just now climbed up my leg, claws in my pants, but I didn't feel a single claw in my leg (pants unharmed too). I picked him up and put him on my chest--I have a big chest for a small person lol--and he sat there inside the V of my V-neck sweater, not a single claw bared.

I'll go away now. Sorry to have harmed.

Take it from me, I Have a All four pawed Declawed Cat, I rescued him this Way. I Would never have done that to him. He Has trouble at times jumping up high and A lot of times falls due to not getting a good grip. He can't Scratch himself and Has no defense. It's Sad that Someone Spent all this money getting him Declawed and Then threw him out like he was trash. Mow there is no going back for him in the claw Dept. I would Def Question The Breeder and Would think by now the one who is trying to get a Serval cat Would Have researched If they Were legal before buying it.
