Man I feel you.. this happened to our lovely kitten Lola. At the end we had to let her go out cause she loved it and cried when we wouldnt allow her to go out. The backyard is safe, 4 houses in the back with little gardens to climb around and play. After that of course there is the street, little street not very busy that leads down to the seafront of the city. We live on the ground floor and have 6 possible exits for any cat. No need to mention that during the summer ( May-October ) The house has open windows and doors to keep the air circulating, temperatures are high around 28-42 Celsius with high humidity. Long story short one year later we found her dead under my landlords car :(...no idea what happened to her or she died. this is going to be our first and biggest challenge this time. We even think to move to another place when our contract ends in January, not sure yet. The Real estate market doesnt offer many good options but we will go for more safety when we get our baby. You say you live in the country... is it open space ? to you own a big piece of land ? sorry for the intrusion but you could perhaps build him a Big enclosure or even better a "Park" for Ganhja :) . He would like that I think ..

Savannahs and running loose is a bad idea, doesn't matter where you live. They just are attracted to trouble.

First I'll admit that Duma isn't as nutso crazy about going out the door, so much as he is nutso crazy about following me wherever I go. What I mean by that is he doesn't cry to go out as long as I'm in, but when I'm out he sits in the window and calls for me (and you can hear his call all the way down through my complex, it's funny 'cause he doesn't sound like a cat).

What I've done is reason with him. Never talk in the negative (someone told me that cats don't understand negative, so always say, "Stand back by the sofa" or "Four feet on the floor" for the counter, which doesn't really work but he does seem to listen a bit more lol). I tell him to stand back, and wait for me to come home. Look him right in the eyes. This was after trying the squirt gun and the scat mats. Most of the time he listens, and he seems happier lol When he doesn't want to listen, I get him in position between the door and the wall before I walk out.

What happens if they like water and showers and swimming ...etc...
You don't mist them with it, you squirt them with a hard stream, in the face, and add vinegar to the water for good measure if necessary...

I've tried reasoning with them and all I get back is sass... I've resorted to making loud, ridiculous noises... Usually, I just get the "you're an effing moron" look, but every so often they take off running... I think it's nice they let me feel like I'm in charge every now and then.

I have a secret weapon when I come in and have groceries.
My 3 year old boy comes in first and keep a "safe" zone, it is very effective for now... specially with all the curious kittens.

Paragon escaped by himself, he came back to me when I called him.
bug screens are not savannah proof, he just climbed on it.

Ours come right back too. I think a lot of their "escapes" are just their desire to be in the area their humans occupy, at least as far as our cats go... Our backyard is completely fenced in with 6' high fences which works for the kittens, but not so much for the adults... King's easily cleared it before... I doubt he'd do it again though, considering he was on his leash at the time and his grandiose decent into freedom halted abruptly a foot and a half shy of the ground...
