Alex, you might also want to consider a pet fountain. Since we added one, Mickey has not needed IV fluids (although that may be coincidence).
Giving him chicken broth is a good thing, I'm glad to hear he kept it down. For Mickey, I will either buy chicken, and shred it in the food processor, then cook it into a slurry mess with 1-2 tablespoons of rice (if he REALLY doesn't feel well), roast it and shred it or boil it and dice it. Mickey has not really figured out "chew" so we go with tiny pieces, think no larger than 1/4" square. I think The point about adding taurine and other supplements and probiotics is a really good one.
I have not tried yogurt with Mickey, mostly because Jarvis (who is food dominant in our house) goes ballistic for it, but that is another excellent suggestion. When you do start feeding him solid food, start with a tablespoon or two at a time.
Our other two boys can be relied upon to eat what I make for Mickey, so I tend to do 2/3 pound of organic chicken (breast, thighs, legs- depends on what is on sale, what time of the day it is, and how tired I am) for the three of them, but Mickey only gets a little at a time. Usually it is all gone and I need to cook again within 24 hours. I never do more than 1/4 cup cooked rice at a time (1/8 cup to cook) even when all three of them are on Mickey-restricted foods.
