Your SV's Water Intake

Raw beef not bake ?
correct. to do this properly, i buy in larger quantities at better prices. typically i buy 25-50 lbs at one time, cut it up into zip lock bags of 1 day portions then freeze it. each day i unthaw a portion and cut it up for them to eat. works well. the key is not to leave it out for say longer than maybe 2-3 hrs on their plate (well to avoid bacteria, etc). so anything not eaten i re-fridge until the next dinner later.anyways back to topic, the raw beef does contain a lot of water so that's another reason it's good for them IMO.

Each of my SV's drinks about 70mL/day from the water fountain. They're decent sized at 18 and 20lbs though.

I did a mini "mass balance" around my SV cats:) Here's my measurements and math below:

I have an F2 SV (18 lbs/8.2kg) and an F1 SV (20 lbs/9.1kg). My F1 consumes more than my picky F2. He lives to eat, while my F2 eats to live.

1. Food - i feed both raw beef. My F2 goes thru about 450g/day, my F1 goes thru about 600g/day. Raw beef is about 75% water.
F2: 338mL/day water
F1: 450mL/day water
2. Water - both drink from my Glacier Point water fountain. They go thru about 1L of water per week, which for what it's worth is chilled to -13F of room temperature (~57-68F in AZ). I'd say the drinking is about equal between the two.
F2: 70mL/day water
F1: 70mL/day water
3. Total -
F2: 408mL/day water (50mL/kg)
F1: 520mL/day water (57mL/kg)

My numbers above seem to approximate references from the Internet of about 50-60mL water per day per kg of your cat's weight (water from food and water dish). My numbers above would indicate that only 15-20% of the water intake comes from their water fountain. If I fed them just dry kibble I would expect this percentage to be much, much higher.

Roughly understanding water intake is good to know. For example, when I first got my F2 as a kitten I administered syringed B1 vitamin water to him during one of his infections. At that time I had grossly underestimated how much syringed water would help him out: I was injecting him with like 1mL of water!!! haha! Well later I went to my vet and he chuckled at my minuscule 1mL injection. No he said, try more like 15-25mL of water, which I later did. And nowadays, better understanding how much water they actually consume, I give each pumpkin puree with supplements via syringe every 2 days using about 20mL of water each (this works very well btw, though they would never consume it by themselves).hope this helps...dj

EXCELLENT quantitative analysis!

This is my first cat, so I'm not certain how much he should be drinking. My mother had a cat who developed diabetes and consequently drank much more than normal. Consequently, water intake is important to me.

Louie is on the small side for an F1 male, at 15 pounds (6.80 kg). Since he's 18 MO, he might grow a bit more so he MIGHT reach a final, healthy weight of 16 pounds.

He eats 2x/day, 100% Royal Canin kibble, which I moisten with enough water to cover half way..............maybe 8 ml/serving. He drinks from his fountain often, and I generally have to top it off every day with about 12 oz fresh water (I flush/clean it weekly). Using your formulae, his daily intake is about 371 ml water not counting the trace amount present in his kibble, which translates to 54.6 ml/kg. This is dead center of the recommended 50-60 range that you found.

@scorpius...do you give the pumpkin and supplements via syringe instead of in the food?

Hi Paige, no I feed them raw beef as their main staple. but every 2 days or so i supplement each with pumpkin puree + taurine/lysine/calcium/vit b/kitten milk mixture. they would not take supplements on their own and would not eat beef mixed in with it. but they take the syringed mixture very well. i have to sit them down of course to do this - but they're used to it now.

Thanks DJ, yeah that is what I meant - sorry :) Just sounds like a good way to do it because mine do not like supplements on their raw either...and Ixas/Cinny are now eating raw beef with whole prey only as well...

yeh, the pumpkin puree (base) for administering supplements is really working well for my SV's. i choose a puree with pretty low sugar content and have not noticed anything abnormal. They like the pumpkin and it does help to give them some fiber and i think helps in some digestion as well. But for sure, like yours, my SV's would never take supplements on their own:/ picky guys! dj

So are you using spiced pumpkin or plain pumpkin? I thought the plain didn't have sugar or anything added into it, but have been told not to use the spiced pumpkin on cats.
