I have a question since this little guy is difficult. I need to trim his claws. I know that there is people who say they dont need them trimmed. He does have two trees and does climb and such. But hes caught hes claws in blankets and hes going to hurt himself since everytime that happens, and I try to detach him from whatever it is, he panics and it makes things worse. He does let me play with his paws and back feet, but trying to cut them is near impossible. I could take him to the vet but he becomes very very stressed and will end up defacating everywhere from the stress and makes things even more.
Im sure I might get a negative response here, but is there anything I can give him to calm him enough to get them trimmed. He hates being held and is not a lap cat, yet, I do have hope though, so holding him doesnt work either, and even in a good sleep he will get his back up. HELP!!
If you scruff him (pick him up by the loose skin on the back of his neck) does he go limp? Or does he fight you more?

Whenever I trim my kids Nails, I always play hard with them first. Usually use da bird on a string toy. Tire them out good.!!!! then it's easy peasy to trim their nails and usually don't get a nip of contempt. lmao. When they are relaxed and cuddly, is another good time to do a trim job.

If one chooses their time wisely, often their is nary a concern, fur trimming nails. It's when they don't want it and you want to do it, that's the worst time to trim. when that happens, then it's usually a nip and trim job, or something like that. :roflmao:

When you play with his paws, are you able to extend the claw as well? That is the first step - getting them to allow you to play with the paws and extend the claws.

With Rafiki, we started slow. When I got her, she could not be held for even 30 seconds but she would lay down next to us. We would play with the paws and extend the claws. Then eventually, I would clip one nail. I would rub the little paw and tell her what a good girl she was and give her a little treat. Eventually we were able to do 2 claws at a time. Now I find that while she does not like the nail trimming, she does prefer her nails to be kept short so she is very easy and I can do it by myself. Jammu, on the other hand, requires 2 people and Jammu does not scruff well.

Added note: By picking up Rafiki several times a day for a quick hug, pet and kiss, we have now gotten to the point where she can be held for several minutes at a time.

Yes I do that and thats when he pulls back. He will let me rub them and touch and stuff. Im finally able to pick him up for a minute of two and hes really receptive but if I try and hold where Im attempting to trim claws, he isnt appreciative, he figures you did this for this lol

Cats do need their nails trimmed. Any chance you can wrap him like a mummy in a big towel? Or... Maybe try something natural like nutricalm to calm him down... Or... Try it while he is sleeping... Or have someone scruff him so he is limp and then you trim his nails

I tried the wrapping, he panicked and hes so strong. He can be dead asleep but he wakes up super fast and i am very gentle. I will try the scruffing again. I agree they do need them trimmed, hes going to hurt himself otherwise and thats my concern. He doesnt scratch or attempt to scratch, or does anything like that.
