Hey all!! I just got a new carpet and both my boys wont stop scratching it to pieces. I tried the scratch repellant from the pet store and even made my own from cinnamon, I need help please! What can I do? I was thinking of trying to make my own again but with lemmon grass oil, garlic oil, some kind of citrus again, maybe cinnamon, rosemary, lavender. and like a very dense mixture. Is this ok to do? anyone found a solution to this? They have a huge house and two giant cat tree's and a fishing pole with rabbits feet we play with. I dont understand. We did just move but everything was fine until the new (used) carpet. they did have a small dog - im hoping getting it cleaned will help - cause maybe they dont like the dog smell or the other lady's smell....? ugh
Are they scratching all over the house or in one area? Have you tried moving a scratching post to the area they are most scratching at?

Location of cat trees can be important, it's often convenient to push them into corners and out of our way, but that may also mean it is out of the cats' way and thus the carpet is more conveniently located.

Additionally, maybe try some different scratchers, not all cats are fond of vertical sisal posts for example. So try a carpeted post, a horizontal scratcher, cardboard scratcher etc.

I doubt it is that they don't like the smells but more that the new carpet is of a texture they find pleasurable to stretch their nails out on!

Hey, thanks! ya again - just the carpet in the living room. I'll get some new stuff, but they're really destroying it. The essential oils helped a lot - but not enough - anyone know about my idea to bomb it with the list i provided/?

I thought there was a list on this website of which ones not to use for Savannah specifically but I can't find it.

I agree with Abby on this. I know for sure that Garlic is toxic to cats, and Rosemary can cause seizures in a cat prone to seizures. I would just avoid any EO unless specifically marketed as cat safe by a reputable company.

All felines are allergic to the same things. Garlic is toxic, as are onions.

Have you thought about using scat mats to deter them? I know some here have success with using those.

Did you clean the new (used) carpet with an enzyme cleaner like Anti Icky Poo? The dog smell could be doing it.
