Little bit of a wild ride here. Currently back at the ER as Dino apparently had a reaction to the fentanyl patch. His chin and neck had become swollen, gums pale, pupils dilated and his pads were cold.

No hot water bottle so I filled up a couple travel mugs with boiling water, wrapped them in towels and laid them beside Dino. Called the vet who said bring him in (45 minute drive) and I insisted on a call back from someone as I thought I needed to be doing something more immediately.

A bit panicked, I reached out to Mike (SVDad) and shared what was going on he suggested getting rid of the fentanyl patch. I pulled it off, and started getting ready to head to the Hospital. Of course as things would have it a vet tech called to collect the data and I explained all that was going on.

By the time I'm ready to roll, a patchless Dino is already looking better. Pupils aren't dilated, gums have color, pads are warm and the puffiness is gone.

So here I sit waiting for new pain meds which will be similar to what Dooley had after his surgery.

If it weren't for Mike and the so many things I've learned from this forum, Dino would have had a fraction of the chance he had this evening. So a special thanks to all, from Dino, Dooley, Trish and I.

Phew, what a close call! I've never heard of a cat being allergic to fentanyl, but now you know! I'm so glad Mike had the knowledge and forethought to think of removing it!

Our IM vet doesn't like fentanyl at all for cats. I guess I should have said something, but when your getting all the instructions, hard to do anything but nod your head. Come to think of it, when Chongo had his hip surgery, we had to pull the fentanyl patch early as well.

Agreed, I'm constructing a Mike sculpture as soon as I get home. It'll be made out of clumping cat litter, but it's the thought that counts.

Also, on the Benadryl, what's the appropriate dosage?

Great advice from Mike, so very glad that Dino is okay! OMG. I've had Baz with a bad reaction to buprenorphine but not to the severity of that fentanyl reaction. I'm going to be very careful now if a vet suggests that, in the past the only time one of my cats has had it has been post-spay and my vet insists on staying overnight as they have a vet tech monitoring them the entire time...
