I was wondering if any of the owners of Savannahs purchased from Taran could post current pics and updates? I've recently met up with her to look at her kittens and ask her questions. I'm a bit concerned as this will be my first purchase of a Savannah. I've previously owned 3 Bengals. We met in a parking lot as she would not allow my girlfriend and I to go to her house. Is it normal not to be able to see how the cat is being raised? She said she was TICA but the kittens were not going to be registered? I asked why that was but frankly just didn't understand the answer. Why would someone not register if they were running a legit breeding business? I'm probably ignorant on this but it was a red flag in my mind. I don't doubt her love for her animals but I also want to make sure I'm getting what I paid for. She is saying they are f2.5 from an F3 Savannah/Jungle-cat King & F2 mother. Is there a way to verify this? Just looking for some reassurance and references from anyone that has purchased from her as I have nothing else to go on. Thanks!

Your concerns are valid.

I think others have explained why a breeder might not offer a home visit, but a parking lot location does seem a little dodgy in feeling...I would be uncomfortable in that case too! Some will meet up at their vet's office during the kitten's wellbeing check for example...which I think a nice touch. You get a feeling there that the vet then knows the breeder (so regular vetting) and that the kitten has been seen by a vet before sale.

The lack of registration is a big red flag for me just like you! It costs SO little to register a litter of kittens, so no matter how much of a good price they are offered, it shouldn't be an issue. IMHO if you are paying more than the adoption fee of your local shelter for a kitten then you deserve the registration papers that proves your kitten is of the breed you are purchasing.

As others have said, there is no such thing as F2.5 and Taran has been told this before. It is dishonest to be trying to pass these kittens off as something they are not. The father is said to be a Chausie but he is polydactyl and I think actually was a Junglebob which is a cross between a Chausie and Pixiebob... so there is jungle cat heritage. But I do not believe there is any Savannah behind him.

and I forgot to add the old saying "you get what you pay for", this applies some to buying a Savannah like most things. An item that is highly discounted is often cheap for a reason.... definitely the other end means that there are some catteries that charge exorbitant prices for equivalent kittens, so research is important.

You asked for recommendations in CA, I don't know if I know of any F3 kittens produced recently, but I know that Nikki of Storyteller Savannahs in LA area is expecting an F3 litter sired by my stud very soon.. I can recommend her, as I would also recommend Sandy of Halestone Savannahs and Kelly of Wyldthingz off the top of my head...

Another of our mods, Trish at allearz (http://www.allearzsavannahs.com/available-f2s.html) is kinda close to you, near Vegas. She occasionally has nonstandard coated SVs that may be in your price range. That's another thing you can consider unless you are absolutely set on golden coat w/spots -- the non standards which include marbles, servaline, and non standard colors such as chocolate and blue with spots. They may be a bit reduced in price because of their color/coat pattern but not always. There are some outstanding nonstandard SVs produced that are very typey even though their coats/colors are not considered standard.

What really intrigued me about Tarans cats are that they are F3's for what I would consider a reasonable price.
Well as the saying goes, you get what you pay for, F3s are not all equal. If you are willing to pay less for a kitten that is not papered so who knows what it is or if it is even a Savannah, and claimed to be a Savannah 2.5 which there is no such thing, then you might as well go to your local shelter and pick out a nice spotted, striped, or ticked kitty as you will be getting the same thing.

I think I will be having a litter of F3Cs in a couple of months (pregnancy not yet confirmed) and I think I sell my kittens at reasonable prices. If you are interested you can email me privately at patti@jasirisana.com (I am in AZ)

My breeder did not registered with TICA, gave GENERIC PAPERWORK, NO FAMILY TREE( unless I agreed to pay extra money). Even thought I sent documentation from my vet that she could not have kittens.....one must be very careful and beware of breeders in it just for the money. Do your investigating!!!

Eddies a ham!
If you want a Savannah, you're definitely in the right place, if you want a cheap cat...sometimes the vets have some for little to no $... If you have enough $ to buy this kitten, put it up & keep saving until you have enough to buy a registered Savannah so you KNOW what you are getting...your choice but once you've adopted it you're responsible for it's needs; housing, food, entertainment, medical...don't set yourself up for failure or disappointment.
