Domestic Wildcats Sells Sick Kittens - domesticwildcat.com - Domestic Wild Cat - Taran Nolan

I purchased one of their kittens, he was born on February 26, 2015. He was very loved and well cared for, so we were caught off guard and very scared when he came down with the first symptoms that suggested FIP in the first week of August. My five children became very attached to Pete as the wonderful family addition that he was. After $2000 spent at the vet trying everything, Pete lost his battle two weeks after presenting with his initial symptoms, he was not quite six months old. It was a very bad experience for me to witness each of my children watch a very young healthy kitten suddenly become ill and lose his life shortly after.

I'm so very sorry for your loss Steve, FIP is a horrible disease, but it is even more excruciating when you have to watch your children suffer through the loss and grief as well

Thank you all for conveying your sympathies. I struggled with posting my experience as it exposes my ignorance. As a newcomer to the cat world, I simply looked on line, found different breeds of cats, asked a few questions to some friends who owned cats and read some available, albeit superficial information on Savannahs. Our family had suffered some recent tragic losses and my intention was to bring some happiness to our home. The kids were extremely excited with anticipation. I found a local breeder on line. Most breeders were out of state, this breeder was within close driving distance.
As an outsider, I found there is not much readily available information on Savannahs and it wasn't easy doing my due diligence. I pretty much felt I trusted what I read, picked out a kitten, sent in a deposit and as Brigitte said, I jumped in before I realized I'd been had. I found the Savannah Cat Chat site well after I sent in my deposit, and at that point, having read some relevant posts, I could only hope for the best. Unfortunately as Jaz said, I became one of those horror stories. Needless to say aside from the costs incurred, the grief and real life horror, it is also humiliating. My only hope is that my story will be read by another prospective pet owner and save them from such a heart wrenching experience.

Steve. We ALL feel sympathy when someone is taken advantage of like that. Good luck and good healing for all. :)

I'm so sorry that your grief is added to by the feeling that you are humiliated by the poor decision. Please forgive yourself. You did as countless other people do. To be honest, I did this when I bought my beagle years and years ago. I did a little reading on the internet about dog breeds, decided a beagle would fit our home well and looked for a local breeder. I did very very poor research of that breeder and ended up with a dog that has cost us over $20,000 in vet bills, has chronic issues that require lots of vetting and medications... I love him dearly but it is my fault that I didn't do that search right.

We live and learn. I really hope that you don't blame the Savannah breed for this, you likely will make a great choice next time and have the pet you will get to enjoy happily for many years.

I agree 100% with Brigitte. Please don't blame yourself. You did what you thought was right for you and your family and the new kitten at the time. Many of us...pet owners as well as breeders...have made the wrong decision concerning a certain pet (cat or other animal) we bring into our lives. I am so very sorry for your experience, and especially for your children :( Please hang in there and continue to research breeders, get several references from happy kitten customers, and ask questions here on the forum. When the time is right, the right kitten AND the right breeder will appear for you..it won't be magic and may take some time, but it will happen!
