Measure you cats!

Nope, because I'd want to chart weight too. Part of the urge is due to my background as a wildlife rehabber where size & weight are important indicators used to determine health and potential survivability of a wild animal being released back into its native habitat, particularly if it was brought into the rehab center as a baby or juvenile.
Good point, and taken.

Oh- and most breeders do chart their kittens- as kittens. But you can chart on weight, not on height. As long as a kitten is gaining on a daily basis, you usually know things should be a-okay :)

As long as people keep putting it out there that Savannahs are Huge and Wild, we will continue to have them banned...that is all I am saying...not that people should not have a large cat. it is all in how they are described...unfortunately we are living in a time where words become very important...

That is so true. But nowhere in the breed description does it say they should be wild, but it does explain tall long lean slender, etc. These still provoke such questions like "how big do they get?" so I still think it is a question breeders should answer :p

It is indeed a Catch-22.

We meet the same questions every time, too: "I want a large, wild cat", the answer to which should be "get a moggie", but is a patient question like "are you talking about a savannah, ´cause that´s what we got, followed by "a bengal can often be more massive"...

And I do answer it- by saying, "Come to a show and meet some!"

LOL.

Honestly- there is too much variance from cat to cat to give a true answer. I stick by my response that my cats are taller then the average housecat, but not much heavier. Instead, they are very leggy and they are much like the greyhounds of the cat world ;) Greyhounds might not be heavy, but due to their long legs and build, they give an illusion of height.

And let us not forget that the Guinesss record holder as world's tallest cat is a savannah. It confuses the general public to see this stuff in the media and then find out breeders are a bit touchy about the subject. But the important question here is whether anything can about the mixed message. I'm thinking not.

I agree Deborah and I have always had an issue with that...although tall is different than HUGE...but it is still sending a mixed message...
