Neutering

I'm switching over to a cat only vet but we had Jengo's neuter done at a more cost effective vet and it was fine, he was back to himself the next day.

My Aussies are Ace sensitive. They are just extra stoned. Unless they have an liver issue where they can not clear the drug, they will be fine. I think Ketamine has a hallucinatory effect that is why they are stoned for a while and weird out but it also has a side effect of a pain reliever.

I always use the local spay/neuter clinic to have my animals fixed. Since I do early spay/neuter, they are well versed in it.

Loki is getting neutered next week, he will be 17 weeks...how long does it take for them to be able to have free run of the house..do I need to isolate him so he can heel for a week? I checked with teh clinic and they use Ketamine..should I worry?

If the clinic is accustomed to using ketamine, then it is safer than having them experiment with another type of anesthetic imho... but you may have to watch for him being very disoriented afterwards. Remember it is a hallucinogen so he likely will be a bit out of it for the first bit of his recovery. Keep him confined and just watch him. I'd not think that for more than 24 hours though. But then I don't really know, I've not used it on my cats as my vet thinks ketamine very "old school".

Question for you, our breeder told us to Neuter at 6 months. Layla is currently 17 weeks old. Does it matter when a Savannah is Neutered? I am hearing 6 months from several other Savannah owners.

Is Layla a male or female? A male is neutered, a female is spayed.

I think you should go with your breeder's recommendation but in general people vary with what they think is the best age. The longer you wait the more chance the kitten will develop adult characteristics such as spraying to attract a mate. On the flipside, some are uncomfortable with early spay/neuter for the dangers of anesthetizing when the kitten is smaller. My vet has a 5 month or 5lb limit for example...

I think the recommended age/weight varies from vet to vet and it depends on what they are comfortable with. My vet does a lot of spay/neuter for a local rescue organization and will do it on kittens that are 2 lbs, but prefers they be 4 lbs. I generally wait until they are 4 lbs to spay them. A neuter is less complicated and I have down it when they are 3-4 lbs.
