Now Presenting: Yuki and Yeti

Last night was a laugh riot. I was in the safe room sitting down yacking on the phone to a friend. Yuki and Yeti have very sharp hearing and I also have the phone volume high. Needless to say they were trying to listen to the conversation especially when my friend's cats started making noise. :)

Yuki decided to get closer to the action and was going from one shoulder to the other, whichever side the phone was on, and nuzzling the phone and also gently pulling my fingers away from the phone with her mouth so she could get closer to the phone. Then she was grooming my fingers while having her ear pressed to the receiver.

Got a voicemail from the vet this morning. They have not been able to identify the fungus species that is causing the problem. It is not any of the common fungi involved in ringworm, but it is behaving the same way.

I am going to have them send the cultures to the lab.

Today is bath day so later on I will be bathing the kitties and hoping not to get mauled.

So far Paz and I remain free of the problem and it looks as if Yuki's infection has remained only on her left ear and may be getting contained by the treatment.

Yeti is not getting worse from what I can tell and may also be contained somewhat by the ointment which I need to buy more of later today.

At least the cats are in good spirits and good health otherwise. They are actively playing, eating very well, drinking well, and using the litter box also very well. :)

Ringworm can be hard to culture/diagnose for some odd reason. I can't remember why my vet told me... So if it acts like a duck and quacks like a duck- it must be... ringworm. LOL.

I was just following up on the phone with the vet and she pretty much said the same thing. We're going to start them on oral meds since the ointment and shampoo is only holding the line and not improving things.

On a positive note, Yeti is obviously gaining weight and size.

Also they enjoy watching some tv, Grimm seems to get their attention. I took my laptop into their room for a couple hours Sunday and watched various programs while spending time with them. They like the various creatures apparently.

Seriously- I know the oral meds are harsh on their systems, but all the research I've done- I'd always jump to it first unless the babies are too young. Let me see if I can pull up the articles I found a long time ago...

I'm not sure what meds are being used now- things can change year to year- month to month- but this is just an example. I really think unless it's very mild- as you said- the shampoos and creams only 'hold the line' versus actually fighting the battle and finishing it. We want a KNOCK OUT when it comes to this nasty fungus!

(And it's funny- whenever I type about it- I want to knock on wood because with kids and a life (yes- I said it- I have a life- small as it may be) of my own- I always worry about trekking it into the house!)/

I have an order of Fluconazole in a liquid suspension mixed with salmon oil flavoring due to arrive toward the end of the week or by Monday. I don't remember the dosages off the top of my head, but this should do the trick. The treatment will go on for 6 weeks at which point we take another culture and the treatment continues two more weeks and then another culture. If we have beat it by then I will be quite happy.

Meanwhile baths will continue until morale improves. :p
