Way too expensive for my budget

Buying a center hub wheel at this juncture doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Also spending premium dollars on a 48" wheel that's simply smaller than ideal for our cats doesn't make much sense either.
Personally, the smaller footprint of a hubless wheel is most appealing. If OFC doesn't get it right someone else will. The market potential in this category in the US alone is over a million units, just have to increase the quality above what's currently being delivered.
Anyway, had OFC put a mallet in the box and had better instructions there would have been a lot less of a negative groundswell. I certainly have my frustrations but more than anything I think it's my father coming out in me knowing I could have designed it better.

John, 48" is not too small...it is what my Maclaw is and it is a perfect size for my cats...the OFC wheel is also 48" so I'm not sure what you are referring to...
The catswall wheel is hubless as well and they have a new version out, so that may be the way to go for some...I am sticking with the really good quality wheels because my cats use them a lot...

Dino stretched out is over 50" long, toe to toe and he is not a big SV weighing in at only 14lbs. While he made some efforts with the OFC wheel, he certainly wasn't able to stretch out his strides, when it slowed down a wobble was introduced and he started giving it a bit of pause. Luring him back on the wheel has been impossible because with his back feet on the ground he can easily reach the bait. So I can get him to do a front foot cruise with his feet past the 10 o'clock mark or about 40" high.
Dooley on the other hand makes a good go of it but at just 5 lbs his length isn't restrictive.
Also, I am definitely not endorsing the OFC wheel. With some time you can get it to work fairly well and the way it should have came out of the box. That's certainly not ideal and fertile ground for a OFC 2.0 project or whoever else decides to enter the fray.

I thought the Maclaw wheel you have was 60". The GoPet wheel looks pretty scary for a cat. If there isn't some plexiglass over the spokes, it's a disaster waiting to happen for our cats.
Just an estimate, but at full tilt Dino's stride is somewhere between 6 to 8'. That's half a 48" wheels track length and probably closer to 2/3s. Never thought much about the diameter until I saw Dino stretching out on the wheel.
In all, I should have probably just got the Catswall wheel as I intended so I would have an easier time addressing the flaws and been a year and a half ahead of where I sit today. I feel the same about modifying the OFC wheel as I was prepared for it to have shortcomings despite hoping for the best.
Yes and I posted the link to the wheel I would get... The go pet is just another example... Not one that I have or would buy right now ... But it is the only 60" wheel out the right now and like I said, many people have them and there have been no issue...I have seen them in person and they are pretty arrive!
