Except around here, I cannot buy any incandescent lights in wattage greater than 60. And that is too dim.

They can't get to them easily.

But there is an overage of scare for CFLs. Yes they have Mercury in them. But ALL florescent lights do. I have been cut by glass from florescent lamps and no side effects at all. I am thinking the story you mentioned the guy got phosphor poisoning instead of mercury. The is not that much mercury in them. But there is a lot of phosphor. But it is probably something we all will have to get used to. The industry is cutting back on the inefficient incandescent bulbs. The more light they get from the CFLs the less older types will be made. They are removing incandescents from the store shelves already.

I will never go CFL, even if I have to go back to a candle and flame.. I have 2 florescent tubes in my house and they are covered. When I change them, I have shoes, well dressed, and Jake and Elsa are locked up..

They last forever though!

Forever is a long time.... I have seen LED bulbs burn out... They last a VERY VERY long time as a rule of thumb. I use them on my RC Planes for flying at night, and had 1 to burn out on me. Notice a lot of newer car tail lights are LED and how many of them have burnt out segments... Be nice if you could replace them individually however.

Even it is was from the "phosphor poisoning", do you really want to risk that kind of poisoning to your cats??? of rest of your family for that matter.

I don't want them drinking the water or breathing the air either, as they are just as bad, but one must choose his/her battles. In my 67 years, I have never seen an injury or sickness from the breakage of any type of lamp. And I have had lots of them. But as technology gets better I will move on to LEDs. Still too expensive for my budget. And still not bright enough. I have a degree of night blindness. I have to have a lot of light.
The EPA has thrown too much fear into people. Things are not nearly as dangerous as they would have you believe. It is just a money making scheme. Justification for their existence.. Fed government agencies.... Not worth listening to.

JP, What is wrong with you? Those lights were easily accessible to Dino. After all of Chongo's shenanigans and you invite more? o_O I agree, you should have cuffed in to a chair. Oh, wait, yeah, well, uh, ok, so it's impossible to cuff a savannah kitten.....
