Tree question

LOL! I'm trying to sell the old tree on Craig's list ... so far no interest. I built it before realizing how much Savannahs need to be able to jump, not just climb ... :). It was easier to just get a new tree vs. modifying his old one, since I no longer have access to the tools anymore.

I made it sturdy so it could attach to the wall like a shelf ... and Cyro does love to scratch it. However, I'll be moving again in a few months (my apartment community sold, and when my lease renews it's looking like it will cost me $200 more a month :(), and while I negotiated to get permission for a big shelf here ... I'm not sure I'll be so lucky next time :). Plus, I'm hoping having more surfaces Cyro can jump to will help keep him off counters ... maybe ... or am I dreaming???

I think the tree you made is awesome. I hope you can keep it. I agree that you'll probably need a bigger base on the new tree. Either that or put a few cement blocks on it to keep it stabile. I cannot understand why commercial cat trees aren't made with better bases. Don't these people have cats or cat-test their products?

Witchy, I am sure there are VERY FEW Savannah testers. Probably MOSTLY lazy old Domestic Tom cats. And really, Do you honestly think MOST manufacturers really care to test. They are in it for the money. Sorry for being and old fuddy duddy, but the almighty $$$ is what is important in today's world of goods production.

So, the Americat tree arrived today. Overall built well, however, it's a bit wobbly when Cyro jumps from the ground onto one of the platforms, and since most of the surfaces are curved, that means I can't put it in the corner for stability. I have it up against a wall, which helps, however, depending on how much more he grows I may have to either create a heavier base, or anchor it to something. Attached is a picture of his current play set up. View attachment 16125
Same problem I had even with it against a wall. The 2 top ones broke off pretty fast.

I have found some great cat trees on Craigslist. Two I got last summer were $800+ custom trees that I bought for $60 and $125. Both looked like new; the owners ordered them and to their dismay, their (ragdoll and persian) cats were afraid of the trees and never used them. Their misfortune=my good luck and great deals :)

These are pics of the CL trees I found. The tallest, in the background, was $125, original price $950. The flower tree was $60, original price $800. That one is the favorite by far. Pictured in front is a real tree stump with a green toilet seat cover and a cheapy $20 two-hole kitty condo, also with toilet seat cover ;)

I thought about that but since i haven't been around cats I wasn't sure how they would react to the smell of other cats. Could you share your view on that?

I have never found it to be too much of an issue, I have sprayed down a tree with Anti-Icky-Poo and never had a problem.

I have never had an issue with my kitties smelling other cats' scents from a used tree. Mine might initially sniff at the tree with wrinkled noses, but the lure of a new toy to climb on takes precedence over any lingering scents that might be there, so it is very soon covered with my own cats' scent. I DID make sure each tree did not have urine or other offensive odors before purchasing. Two had never been used...in fact still had the tags on them and were stored in a spare room or the garage, and the other used tree I purchased had not had a cat on it in over three years and was used sparingly, as well.
