I was very curious about Mikono's pedigree,
so I probed Taran a bit about Mikono's parents and where they came from. The parents came from two different breeders. I then contacted those two breeders and I eventually got the pedigree all the way back to the Serval and Jungle Cat which is what Taran's kittens are. If anyone who purchased from her is interested, I can direct you to these breeders. I can only assume everyone involved was giving me the correct info.

I was wondering if any of the owners of Savannahs purchased from Taran could post current pics and updates? I've recently met up with her to look at her kittens and ask her questions. I'm a bit concerned as this will be my first purchase of a Savannah. I've previously owned 3 Bengals. We met in a parking lot as she would not allow my girlfriend and I to go to her house. Is it normal not to be able to see how the cat is being raised? She said she was TICA but the kittens were not going to be registered? I asked why that was but frankly just didn't understand the answer. Why would someone not register if they were running a legit breeding business? I'm probably ignorant on this but it was a red flag in my mind. I don't doubt her love for her animals but I also want to make sure I'm getting what I paid for. She is saying they are f2.5 from an F3 Savannah/Jungle-cat King & F2 mother. Is there a way to verify this? Just looking for some reassurance and references from anyone that has purchased from her as I have nothing else to go on. Thanks!

No such thing as an f2.5, I can respect a breeder not inviting you to their home but I wouldn't buy a cat from them. Also, no papers, no purchase for this fella. Not that i really care about the papers, but any breeder worth their salt should.

Can you tell us what her answer is? Maybe ask her in an email again why the kittens are not registered and then we can help you decipher the answer...

There is no such thing as an F2.5 and why Taran continues to say this is beyond me and honestly, seems very ignorant...it seems that her kittens are probably not really savannahs and more jungle cat. If you do not get the pedigree of the kitten, which you would get if they were registered, you cannot verify that what she is saying is true.

Many breeders have closed catteries and don't allow visits. There are several reasons for this, the most important is because strangers can bring disease into a cattery and young kittens are more susceptible disease. Equally important - can you imagine if breeders allowed everyone who asked to come see the kittens how many people would be traipsing through their home night and day? It would be a virtual zoo (and in fact, some people seem to think that's exactly what it is). I personally work 50-60 hours a week and have little enough time to care for the cats without having to entertain lookie-loos wanting to see a Savannah. Finally, there is the safety issue - there have been past stories in the news about people coming over supposedly to see a puppy and assaulting the breeder, stealing the puppies, and worse.

Having said that, if someone is interested in a specific kitten and puts a deposit down I will consider letting them come visit the kitten, however I would much rather visit their home so that I can see where my baby will be going. More importantly, this helps socialize and familiarize the kitten with the new people and environment it will be living in so that when it's time for the final move they are able to make the transition easily.

There are ethical, experienced breeders in California and neighboring states from whom you could purchase a healthy SV bred for outstanding temperament and type and I think you should consider them.

Yeah there are quite a lot of breeders which is actually making it quite hard to make a decision. What really intrigued me about Tarans cats are that they are F3's for what I would consider a reasonable price. Most breeders around here don't offer F3's and when they do they are way out of my budget. Do you have any that you recommend?

The difference is that what she is offering is an F3A, which in cat terminology means they are outcrossed or mixed breed. Most other breeders offering F3 kittens are offering F3C which reflects generations of Savannah to Savannah breeding, hence more Savannah content. Hardly any reputable breeder is using outcross breeds for their program anymore. Years ago (say 11 years ago when I started breeding) they did because we had SO few fertile Savannah males... that's not the case now.
